Obscura

Obscura is a Bavarian band rooted in Landshut, where guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer founded the German technical death metal group in 2002. In the years since, it has released seven studio albums, a compilation and seventeen music videos. Its catalogue is the clearest measure of how far the band has travelled, and the most recent entry, A Sonication, appeared in February 2025.

The early years were built on local shows and a concept tour in Bavaria, followed by a self-titled demo recorded in November 2003 with producer V.Santura, whose credits include Triptykon and Pestilence. The debut album Retribution was recorded within a three-week session with Alexander Krull and self-released in July 2005, and a European tour with Suffocation followed in 2006. Signing to Relapse Records in 2008 led to the Cosmogenesis album and the band's first North American tour, and the 2011 album Omnivium was later supported by a crowdfunding campaign that raised $14,600 within 60 days.
