Blane Muise grew up around Blackheath in South London, head girl at her school and by her own account a homebody lost in fantasy and books. She now records as Shygirl: singer, rapper, DJ and songwriter whose music draws on dance, hip-hop, grime, experimental pop and deconstructed club, with hyperpop another label attached to her. She co-founded the Nuxxe label and collective, and her circle of collaborators, among them Sega Bodega, Arca and Sophie, places her at the experimental edge of pop. Rihanna has used Nuxxe tracks in Fenty Beauty commercials and fashion shows.
Her first single, "Want More", produced by Sega Bodega, arrived in 2016 as the first release on Nuxxe. In 2018 she left a job at a modelling agency to pursue music, and released her debut EP, Cruel Practice, that May. Alias followed in November 2020 on Because Music. A 2021 single, "BDE", featured slowthai. Her debut album, Nymph, came out on 30 September 2022 to acclaim from NME, Crack Magazine and Pitchfork. She opened for Sugababes at The O2 Arena in 2023 and joined Charli XCX and Troye Sivan's Sweat Tour across North America in 2024.
