Dublin's U2 have spent decades turning post-punk beginnings into music of wide, anthemic reach, with Bono's expressive voice set against the Edge's chiming, effects-laden guitar. Alongside Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., they formed in 1976 and have kept reshaping their sound. Bono's lyrics, often touched with spiritual imagery, weigh the personal against the sociopolitical, and the band are well known for elaborate live tours.
